Dance Instructor

A growing school is seeking instructors.  Instructors at Dance Gallery teach character development and leadership skills to youth and adults. The ideal candidate will have strong skills and significant experience in teaching several dance styles which may include tumbling, aerial silks, ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, and tap. Other experience includes choreographing and staging performances, creating lesson plans appropriate for different skill levels/ages, and facilitating a safe and positive classroom environment. Candidates must be comfortable with and enjoy teaching a wide range of ages and skill levels from very young children through adults.

Other Qualifications Include:

  • The ability to set and remain accountable to personal goals

  • To be coachable and eager to learn new skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required to be an effective mentor/teacher to students and to be able to communicate with parents and staff.

  • Working as an effective team member staging productions, participating in special events, and attending regular staff training and meetings.

  • As part of the interview process, candidates may be asked to provide examples of their past choreography or invited to teach as a guest instructor.

Costume Department - Head Seamstress

Dance Gallery of SD is seeking a Head Seamstress for their Costume Department.  The Head Seamstress will work with the Costume Manager, the Studio Director, and the Artistic Director for the Dance Gallery Youth Ballet.  Hours for this position are variable depending on the status of upcoming productions and recitals.  Hours to be negotiated with Dance Gallery of SD.

The responsibilities for the HEAD SEAMSTRESS include, but are not limited to:

  • Competent with sewing with a sewing machine on complex and simple projects.

  • Competent with hand sewing projects.

  • Directly involved with planning, creating and managing sewing projects for annual productions and other performance opportunities (Annual Recitals, Classical Ballet Productions such as Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppelia, and other smaller community performances)

  • Work with the Costume Manager to assign sewing projects on "Volunteer Work Days."

  • Attend "Volunteer Work Days" to manage sewing projects for volunteers.

  • Meet with the Costume Manager to organize the selection of spring recital costumes, and determine alterations.

  • Develop a plan with the Costume Manager to set up “fittings” for dancers during a set week in the calendar in which both the Seamstress and Manger are in attendance. 

  • Work with the Costume Manager to organize a system for costumes that need to be altered.

  • Work with the Costume Manager to decide on the best methods for cleaning costumes.

  • In conjunction with the Costume Manager, keep an open and inviting environment for volunteer helpers.

  • Attend staff meetings when requested.

  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills

  • With the Costume Manager, plan volunteer days for parents to assist with sewing projects

  • Ability to work as an effective team member

Costume Department - Costume Manager

Dance Gallery of SD is seeking a Costume Manager for their Costume Department.  The Costume Manager will work with Staff and Teachers in a multitude of facets providing support to the Studio Director.  Depending on what productions are scheduled, hours for this position could range from 5-15 hours per week.  Any hours beyond this range, should be determined between the Costume Manager and Dance Gallery of SD.

The responsibilities of the COSTUME MANAGER include, but are not limited to:

  • Effectively communicate and work with the Head Seamstress

  • Organize the costume room, production room, fabric/headpiece/prop room in a way that is easy to locate costumes.

  • Assist the Head Seamstress on organizing costumes for performances (Annual Recitals, Classical Ballet Productions such as Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppelia, and other smaller community performances).

  • NOT required to sew, but it will be helpful for the Costume Manager to be able to identify mending projects for the Head Seamstress.

  • Meet with each teacher during early December/January to select costumes for the Spring Recitals.

  • Develop a plan with the Head Seamstress to set up “fittings” for dancers during a set week in the calendar in which both the Seamstress and Manger are in attendance.

  • Identify and organize specific sewing needs for the Head Seamstress.

  • Organize dates to offer “Volunteer Work Days” with the Studio Director and the Head Seamstress.

  • Prepare emails to send to the Dance Gallery families, and maintain a list of those that volunteer to help on “Volunteer Work Days.”

  • Work with the Head Seamstress on organizing a system for costumes that need to be altered for Spring Recitals and Productions.

  • Develop and plan to clean costumes, and implement that plan (launder at the studio, send to dry cleaning, or other methods).

  • Keep an open and inviting environment for volunteer helpers

  • Attend staff meetings when requested

Other qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Strong verbal skills

  • Assist the Head Seamstress with volunteer sewing/work days for parents to assist with sewing projects

  • Ability to work as an effective team member
